Riding a Cycle is STOOPID!

Props to my mom who’s always prohibited me from riding a motorcycle. It’s a DEATH machine. It’s seems cool but LIVING is COOLER! Ahhhh Lis you’re talking crazy… I’m athletic, I’m experienced, and I’ve got good reaction time. That’s what Ben Roethlisberger thought prior to him breaking his jaw, teeth, and nose on Monday. Ah but it’s an isolated case. That could never happen to me…

My brother-in-law thought that before he shattered his leg.

That’s what these other 15 athletes thought prior to their life changing wrecks.

• 2006: Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was badly injured in a motorcycle crash Monday morning and undergoing surgery. He was in serious but stable condition.

• 2006: Houston return specialist Jerome Mathis, a Pro Bowl player, injured his hands and got scrapes and bruises, causing him to miss some offseason work.

• 2005: Cleveland tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. sustained internal injuries and damage to his right shoulder and right knee, forcing him to miss the season. With his leg still healing from a previous knee injury, he was learning how to ride his new sport bike in a parking lot when he hit a curb and was thrown over the handlebars.

• 2004: New York Jets cornerback Jamie Henderson missed the entire season while he rehabbed from injuries sustained in an April wreck. The Jets waived him after he failed a physical.

• 2003: Indy Racing League driver Dario Franchitti broke his back in a motorcycle accident and missed several races, including the Indianapolis 500.

• 2003: Chicago Bulls guard Jason Williams crashed his new motorcycle into a light pole, fracturing his pelvis, tearing knee ligaments and damaging nerves in his left leg. The former No. 2 NBA draft pick hasn’t played in the NBA since but was still working on a comeback.

• 2001: Olympic skier Hermann Maier broke both legs in a wreck, nearly lost one and was told he would never walk again, let alone ski. He won two gold medals at the 1998 Nagano Olympics and added a silver and a bronze this year at the Torino Games.

• 2000: Tennessee safety Marcus Robertson needed 150 stitches in his face after a crash in December and missed the regular-season finale.

• 1999: Miami defensive end Kenny Mixon missed a game with abrasions and bruises he sustained in a crash after his motorcycle hit a wet spot.

• 1999: New York Giants running back Gary Brown was hospitalized in a hit-and-run motorcycle accident over the summer and was sidelined for a couple weeks during training camp.

• 1998: Green Bay defensive lineman Jermaine Smith smashed his elbow in a June accident, prompting coach Mike Holmgren to prohibit kick returner Glyn Milburn from riding the Harley-Davidson he won as MVP of the American Bowl exhibition in Tokyo.

• 1997: Major-league pitcher Steve Howe, who was attempting a comeback at age 39 with the Sioux Falls Canaries of the independent Northern League, was critically injured in a crash and later charged with drunken driving. Those charges were later dropped after prosecutors decided his blood test was improperly obtained.

• 1997: Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Shawn Price injured his elbow in an offseason wreck and missed the beginning of the season.

• 1997: Italian speedskater Orazio Fagone, who won a gold medal in the 5,000-meter short track relay at the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics, had his right leg amputated after a motorcycle accident, ending his hopes for a return to the Nagano Games.

yA, thats alot of stooopid people who think that stuff can’t hurt me. On my “board” a girl sister just got in an accident with her bike, thanks to a leather jacket, helmet, and good shoes. She has injuries but still has her life.

Remember Dell’s son Randy? Got so damaged being hit by a big SUV that they had to search Higgins and Golf intersection for his parts and pieces. Coffin had to be closed and even his mother was not allowed to look upon his face without a veil covering it.

How about those rider dudes that wear those small cap like helmets just as an “in your face” type of gesture to the helmet laws? Every one of these guys all thought it could never happen to them.

Hmm…I guess I will take all the “props” you want to give me. Sounded like a compliment but I am still not sure.

    CML “props” = Proper recognition.

Update on the post, Roethlisberger says “fortunate to be alive” and next time he rides a motorcycle he’ll wear a helmet. What an idiot. The issue is not whether to wear a helmet or not. It’s to get on a bike in the first place.

He goes on to say…”I was confident in my ability to ride a motorcycle and simply believed such an accident would not happen to me.”

I’m seriously considering getting a motorcycle so I guess I’ll get to hear crap from all you guys when I get a bike.

Yes motorcycles are unsafe but so are a lot of things that we do on a daily basis. All you can do is try to be careful and be as safe as possible. That means wearing a helment and other appropriate clothing, riding with partners, and always being alert of your surroundings. Broken bones can heal but a broken skull and/or neck is a little more difficult to rebound from.

John, almost everyone I know that has gotten hurt on a bike has done so by getting hit by a car not paying attention or just not caring how close the cut was to the bike. There are LOTS of guys out there they ride next to a bike with a big attitude. The guys I know that got hurt on bikes were veteran riders and Randy the dude I talked about above was a tough Marine who rode bikes since he was 16. It is not about you..or thinking you can be careful. It is about the other guy. Don’t chance it.

    Your MOTHER IN LAW lol
