NY Times…

Here’s what I learned this week about the presidential candidates.

McCain when was attacked by the Times took the situation head on. He even got his wife speaking on the topic. Within literally hours McCain addressed the concerns the Times poorly credited article.

When Michelle Obama said she was “finally proud of her country” did her husband address it right away? Did Michelle even clarify her point? No, they had their advisers handle it.

Next conflict…
Health Care
Iraq
US Poverty
etc etc etc

Who’s going to handle the issues? The guy who gets to the point? Or the guy who can hardly defend his own wife?

I’m not sure how you can compare an article about an alleged extramarital affair to a comment a candidate’s wife made about how she feels about her country. That’s quite a stretch.

Is what she said really that big of a deal? Neither one of us can say how we would feel if we were a member of a minority in a country that less that 50 years ago was openly discriminated against and today still faces prejudice.

Besides, didn’t she say she was proud of her country? Must we blindly be proud of our country all the time? Were you proud of our country during the Carter administration? Were you proud of our country after Slick Willy got caught with Monica?

It’s not a matter of the content in either situation.

The comparison is how both candidates reacted.

Content determines the response. We didn’t invade Afghanistan after the ‘93 bombing of the World Trade Center because it wasn’t worthy of a military response. 9/11 WAS worthy of a military response. If Brandon calls a guest in your house a “poopy head” your reaction would be different than if he called them a “$@#! head”, wouldn’t it?

Obama’s situation is in direct relation to his inexperience. He better be prepared for all the ancillary stuff the right is going to throw at him.

The stuff Rove was a master at exploiting.

Anything to keep people people from talking about health care, Iraq, US poverty, etc, etc, etc.

You didn’t answer my question. Have you always been proud of America?

I don’t know man. I see your valid point. Its just that if it were my wife that was getting attacked about something she said (regardless of how silly the comment) I would have had her back. It’s still pretty weak sauce that Barrack didn’t say anything.

There’s been times when I’ve not been proud of America. Like when Judge Matthew Dowd gave Orlando Paul Cisneros three years probation instead of the suggested 13 years behind bars. After Cisneros already a convicted child rapist struck yet again.

But generally speaking I’m proud of our country, slumping economy and all.

Ok, Michelle might have slipped (twice on the same day) saying that she was “finally” proud. I’m cool with that. She can make mistakes. But the candidates reactions are so thought out and staged on every little detail, I just think Barrack made the wrong call on this one.

Ripping him for not having his wife’s back is fine (he probably got it pretty good from her, as most husbands would), but to formulate a political opinion on a candidate based on something as trivial as this is, as I said before, a stretch. Let’s see how he reacts when something happens with a bit more meat attached to it. Then we’ll have a clearer picture of the man.
