Nicolas Sarkozy
I think the election of Nicolas Sarkozy as President of France (pictured here) is an amazing and positive event. Here’s wishing him all the success although all the special interest groups (unions, etc.) will do everything they can to keep him from carrying out his plans. Chirac’s legacy will be hard to undo. Here is one of Sarkozy’s campaign quotes: “My devotion to our relationship with America is well known and has earned me substantial criticism in France…I’m not a coward. I’m proud of this friendship and I proclaim it gladly.” Wow.
Sarkozy is 52 years old and is of Hungarian and Greek-Jewish descent. He remarked that many European countries have “full employment” so why can’t France. He went on to say that France’s 35 hour work week had made them lazy and sent the best and brightest to New York or London.
Some interesting statistics: The French save more, work fewer hours and pay higher taxes then we do in the U.S. Also their unemployment is very high, especially for those under 25, which currently is about 22%. Here’s wishing President Sarkozy all the success possible.
