Liberal Logic 101

White guy insults black women with ignorant remarks. White guy’s show is dropped from cable tv and he loses sponsors.

Black Stripper falsely accuses white boys. They’re branded as rapists, thrown out of college, incur millions in legal fees. Lose value time prior to starting their careers.

White guy’s insult treated as a greater crime.

I’m not sure what Liberal Logic has to do with this. Perhaps it’s Conservative Logic 101 to link two unrelated things to try and make the point that white America is somehow getting screwed again. ;)

This is apples and oranges really. One deals with racist and sexist remarks and the other deals with (unsubstantiated) rape. That the accuser was black means nothing. Things wouldn’t be any different if it had been a white stripper making the accusations. The reason this story has legs is that the accused are from Duke, a prestigious university, not that the accuser was black and the accused were white.

I’ll tell you why there isn’t a bigger uproar about the Duke boys. They put themselves in a questionable situation. They were at a party with strippers (I hope the “Right” doesn’t find that morally acceptable) and when you put yourself into a situation like that, bad things could happen and in this case something did. Did they deserve to be falsely accused? No, of course not. But if you choose to put yourself in questionable situations (like drinking and driving), you better be able to deal with the consequences if it goes wrong. I’m a little surprised you’re sticking up for guys who seem to have questionable moral character.

On the other had, the girls from Rutgers didn’t do anything. They were just minding their own business, playing basketball. Most probably had no idea who Imus was. Why a prominent radio host would take a shot at them I’m sure is beyond most people.

An old white guy tries to talk like a black rap artist because he thinks it will come across as funny. It doesn’t, he ends up being branded a racist and gets fired and the whole sorry mess ends up being headline news for weeks on end. If this is so serious a case of racial discrimination that it warrants the involvement of both Al Sharton and Jesse Jackson then it seems fair to assume that this country has met the standard for racial equality and we can now move on to something really important, like ensuring freedom of speech.

Sleeper said that the Duke deal wasn’t race related.

Can’t you say the same thing about Imus based on Sleepers theory? Imus said the girls were “nappy ho’s” maybe Imus was referring to all women basketball players.

No, he pretty much was referring to the Rutgers basketball team.

IMUS: So, I watched the basketball game last night between — a little bit of Rutgers and Tennessee, the women’s final.

ROSENBERG: Yeah, Tennessee won last night — seventh championship for [Tennessee coach] Pat Summitt, I-Man. They beat Rutgers by 13 points.

IMUS: That’s some rough girls from Rutgers. Man, they got tattoos and –

    McGUIRK: Some hard-core hos.

IMUS: That’s some nappy-headed hos there. I’m gonna tell you that now, man, that’s some — woo. And the girls from Tennessee, they all look cute, you know, so, like — kinda like — I don’t know.

I’m not sure what you mean by “theory” but I’d love to hear why you think the Duke story is a race thing other than the accused were white and the accuser was black. Do you really believe it would be different if the accuser had been white?

As for Morningstar’s comments about free speech, Imus was absolutely free to say what he said. But the First Amendment doesn’t say you can’t be fired for what you say. If a sales person called a client a nappy-headed ho, do you think they’d still have their job? The First Amendment also doesn’t say that the public can’t be outraged by what someone says.

Was too much made of this? Maybe. But again, say or do something stupid and you better be prepared for the consequences.
