Gay Jesus?

The March edition of the Insurgent ran one of the strongest attacks on Christianity I have seen. The paper ran graphics depicting Jesus as a homosexual. One was a depiction of a naked Jesus on the cross with an erection; the other, titled Resurrection, showed a naked Jesus kissing another naked man, both sporting erections.

When asked for an apology by Students of Faith, ASUO refused to give one saying that “there are no grounds for demanding an apology from Insurgent.” The ASUO went on to defend the publication saying that the newspaper contributes “to the cultural and physical development of the university community.”

The ASUO Women’s Center tolerates no defamation against gays and lesbians. Three years ago, ASUO demanded that the university radio station, KUGN, drop Michael Savage (a conservative talk show host). The university promptly discontinued the program. But depicting Jesus as a homosexual is perfectly OK.

Here is what Insurgent Student Editor Jessica Brown had to say about the graphics. “I have to say it is really fun to offend people. It is fun to break the rules. If it pisses people off…good that’s the point!!! It has here in this office. So read, get pissed and talk about it.”

Well it pisses me off, not the misunderstanding of who Jesus was but more so the hypocrisy of the American people. Since when did tolerance become a good thing? If you tolerate everything you stand for NOTHING. If this artwork depicted Allah as a homosexual both the artist and student editor would be living in fear of losing their lives.

Incidentally, the University forces all students, including Christians, to pay student dues of $191.00 per term, part of which goes to support the Insurgent. But offending Christians was of no concern to the Insurgent or to University President Dave Frohmayer

Instead of rioting or killing people you can voice your opinion to the Oregon Governor since Oregon University is supporting the student newspaper.

Ted Kulongoski,

I am shocked at the backward steps our country is taking in creating conflict among people of different races, religions and ethnic backgrounds. Countries go to war over articles and pictures like these. We have OUR troops overseas trying to keep the peace in a different nation and here we are creating a “war” among people in our own country. You have ignorant people running this Insurgent paper and it is a disgrace to our country.

Our country was founded on religious freedom and went to war over discrimination. People today are still righting for equal rights and to be treated civilized without racial and religions discrimination.

It is easy for you to turn a blind eye and not put a stop to something such outrageous and sick as these pictures. It is much easier to create conflict then create peace. That is something our country has forgotten.

Everyone has a right to their opinion, BUT there is a time and a place for it. Putting pornographic images of a holy figure in a university paper, in front of students and teachers of all race and religions will create more then just “talk” as Miss Brown states. Nothing good can come from images like this.

Really, isn’t the whole “bash Jesus and the Christians” thing passe’ by now? It’s pretty much in every T.V. show, and has been alive and overdone on college campuses for as long as I’ve been an adult. Is it even controversial anymore? Remember the play, ‘Corpus Cristi,” with the gay Jesus character?

It’s blasphemous, but it’s so overdone now that I’m surprised the fad hasn’t moved on. Really, it’s like knock-knock jokes - long past time to find something new to do.

If the DaVinci Code proves anything in the new weeks, it’s that the idea of bashing Christians or Jesus or the church is hardly controversial. It’s just plain overdone; and frankly, these particular pictures are very parochial. Are these really college kids? Could’ve fooled me.

See…..it’s got Jesus with a crucufix for a penis. Isn’t that funny? Oooh, I bet the Christians will get real mad about this….(snicker, snicker).

I mean seriously, it’s hypocritical in the quest for “tolerance,” and it’s just downright childish. Go back to picking the wings off of flies, children.

This photo does’nt piss me off like you hoped for…. it makes me truly sad to see you demean Jesus Christ our Lord like this when what He did for you is give His life on the cross for you.. Do you know anyone else who would die in your place, i mean literally give up his life for yours? Do you know anyone who would willingly do this for you so that you would’nt die??? I do and His name is Jesus Christ.

All this talk about jesus is making me hungry.
He died on a cross for your sins. So what?
People selflessly sacrifice themselves everyday.
Mother Teresa toiled a LOT longer than jesus, and yet noone has a damn thing to say about it today.
Firemen, soldiers, police die everyday to preserve the lives of others. All they get is a quick note in the newspaper.
If a picture of a fireman with a hard-on was published, would it be viewed as the work of “extremists”? No. It would be viewed as pornography.

Dying & sacrifice (in life or sacrificing one’s own life) is only a small part of what set Jesus apart from other people.

A few of the things that made Jesus special is that he was perfect and there was no need for Him to die for us. Also He was prophesied about hundred years prior to His arrival. He performed miracles. Etc.

So Scoopes you’re right when you say “He died on a cross for your sins. So what?” Because Christ death on the cross is only a small part of the big picture. I would argue that perhaps Jesus own resurrection (Easter) is more powerful then the story of His death.

I think there’s a number of issues that the gay community and conservatives should be seeing eye to eye. (example: the war on terror.)

Radical views (on both sides) only serve to drive a bigger wedge in our country.

Some drawing of gay Christ doesn’t make you reconsider the ego-centric idea of a sexual God?

Maybe some of you will enlighten us on the great heterosexual conquests of your perfect Christ.

The work is IMPORTANT because it exposes the functional-dangereous level intellect growing much more COMMON again as it was in the past.

Are progress as a country has been stalled by systematic support for the masses, with the intent to blind the massess for additional support. From which they make power grabs at liberties.

Only someone of the MASSES could actually have missed the point of why ISLAMISM is a bad thing. He obviously misses the point entirely. We ARE FIGHTING THOSE WHO BAN BLASPHEMY.

At first this enraged me, but as I read the comments I came to see the bigger picture. I do not curse those who drew, painted, sketched this. I do not curse those who edited the mag. Instead, I have compassion for these people and for all that deny Christ. James “The Just” prayed for those that were stoning him, because he did not want God to hold it against them. Jesus did the same thing. People to this day still pray for those who beat and torture them. It is the love of Christ that compells us, not our own self glorification.

Since this country was founded on freedom of religion and freedom of speech,who has the authority to say what is right or wrong? So many people and so many different opinions as to what is acceptable. People should be alot more tolerent of others. It’s just a picture of what some one thinks. We should all know that God and Jesus are so much more then just a picture. Sure it’s bound to offend,but just look at the source.

for the record: tolerance is a vital thing…if it weren’t for tolerance, self righteous christians would have died out long ago (presumably for the betterment of mankind). tolerance is what gives you the right to bellyache about trivial cartoons being published. did these cartoons shake your faith? did it make you see jesus in a new light? did it reaffirm your faith in christianity? did it do anything besides make you wanna huff and puff and blow the democracy machine down? bad, bad, bad liberals, bad art-fags, tsk tsk, contemporary suggestiveness. would you have bitched as hard if the paper had published a prayer in the name of jesus? of course not, but it’s equally offensive to me, a hopeful agnostic, to see a picture or mention of jesus christ in everyday publications, or on tv, or in reference to this country, politics, the war, etc. are you aware that some of the most unspeakable atrocities in history have been carried out in jesus’ name? so, in retrospect, maybe a poorly rendered cartoon isn’t such a big deal, huh?

jesus chirst can’t be gay that is why he never got married cause if he was gay or if got married then he would love that one person more thanhe would anyone else. It says in the bible that jesus loves everyone equaly so if you get married, you love your spouse more than anyone else so i think that jesus was NOT gay

Who does? No one ever makes fun of Nostradamus, Buddha, Allah, etc. You never hear someone using these names in vain, it’s always the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Why not say “MUHAMMED IBN ABD ALLA” or JOSEPH SMITH!” or even “ADOLF HITLER!” instead of Jesus Christ? It is because of the Power of His name. No other name or expression has equal power.

Satan is the one that influences sinners to do such things. Satan wouldn’t cause us to hate prophets who are already dead, what gain would that be for him? He has already defeated them. Why would he also influence sinners to make fun of people who have done good for him? Like Hitler who killed millions of Jews.

You say: “Yeah, but Jesus is dead too.”

Well then if our Lord is just as dead as you say he is, then why don’t you draw pictures of a gay Adolf Hitler? Instead you persist at pointing fingers at our Savior who has done nothing but show Love and Peace, he is the Prince of Peace, and we rejected him. Yet Adolf killed millions and millions Jews, people who believe in Christ, people who Satan hates, but you never make fun of Adolf Hitler or SATAN himself. It is because our Lord has risen from the dead, and is alive today and is returning once again. I hope by then some of you will have grown up and come to accept the salvation that is freely laid down before you, the gift of eternal life.

I hope you see that this doesn’t make us angry, why would we ever fight fire with fire? It would just end up to be a bigger fire. Instead, we don’t fight back, we show love and compassion as our Lord has taught us. We pray for you and hope your eyes are opened and that you see the truth.

Make all the fun you want now, but Jesus Christ our Lord is alive, and will return, and whether you like it or not,
“God has given him a name which is above every name – that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord…” Philippians 2:9-11.
