Former Bears vs Current Bears

Three players released between 2001 and 2003 were more productive than three years worth of Bears offense.

Eddie Kennison: Released in 2001, the year Jerry Angelo arrived on the scene. Since then Kennison has caught 270 passes for 4,438 yards and 21 touchdowns.

2004 KAN 14 62 1086 17.5 8
2005 KAN 16 68 1102 16.2 5

Bobby Engram: Angelo called it “pruning” — he deemed Engram too slow for the high octane offense planned. Angelo projected Bobby Wade as a tougher, more explosive receiver. We all know what happened to Wade this season. Since leaving the Bears Engram has caught 234 passes for 2,933 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Marcus Robinson: After an injury in 2001, John Shoop slotted Robinson at the bottom of the Bears depth chart. In 2002 Angelo declared Robinson had lost his explosiveness and that Justin Gage would be our new vertical threat. Since then Robinson has caught 109 passes for 1,623 yards for 19 touchdowns and an average of 14.9 yards per catch.

2005 MIN 15 31 515 16.6 5

In total these three players accounted for 613 receptions, 8,994 yards and 51 touchdowns. All the receivers, running backs and tight ends in Chicago through 2003, 2004 and 2005 — a total of 26 players — combined for 730 receptions, 7,747 yards and 32 touchdowns. Ouch.
